And waiting for roadside assistance might not fit with your busy schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s what to do if you determine your issue to be a flat battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

First, carry a new set of jumper leads in your boot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, this is what to do to get your battery going again.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do I jump start my car?<\/span><\/strong>
\nBefore you begin, you’ll need help from another motorist who’s car has a full battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avoid linking with an electric car or a hybrid – and make sure there’s no damage to the batteries or leads.<\/span><\/p>\n

First, check all electrical systems in the car with the dead battery are switched off.<\/span><\/p>\n

Park both cars in neutral next to each other, but not touching, with the handbrakes on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turn off both cars, remove the ignition keys and open both bonnets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take the red jump lead and attach one end to the positive terminal on the flat battery. This is usually the one with a + symbol and a red cover.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attach the other end of the red lead to the positive + terminal on the good battery of the other vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take the black lead and attach one end to the negative – terminal of the good battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attach the other end of the black lead to an earthing point on the other car.<\/span><\/p>\n

Usually an unpainted metal part of the engine is best.<\/span><\/p>\n

Start the engine on the vehicle with the good battery and leave to run for about a minute.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attempt to start the engine in the vehicle with the dead battery, leaving both cars to idle for a few minutes if it starts.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the car with the faulty battery doesn’t start after a few attempts, there may be a more serious problem requiring professional assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do I remove jumper leads?<\/span><\/strong>
\nIt’s important you remove jumper leads properly once you have restarted a faulty battery to ensure safety and prevent damage to either vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the battery has been recharged, turn off both engines and remove keys from the ignitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leads should be removed in the reverse order to the way they were connected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take off the black lead from the earth point on your car first before removing it from the other vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then take the red lead from the other vehicle before finally removing it from your car.<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure none of the leads touch as you remove them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is jump starting dangerous?<\/span><\/strong>
\nAs long as you perform the procedure correctly, jump starting your car is relatively safe.<\/span><\/p>\n

But there are still a few safety concerns to be aware of.<\/span><\/p>\n

You should never try to jump start a battery that’s damaged or leaking, or use damaged leads.<\/span><\/p>\n

If jumper leads start to get hot, switch both engines off and let them cool down.<\/span><\/p>\n

Always remove any metal jewellery and make sure nothing metal touches the terminals on the batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take off any loose-fitting clothing such as a scarf or a tie to prevent them becoming caught in moving parts in the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n

And never attempt to remove leads while the engines are running – this can cause serious damage to your car’s electronics.<\/span><\/p>\n
