{"id":13784,"date":"2024-11-12T11:39:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T08:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/?p=13784"},"modified":"2024-11-12T11:39:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T08:39:32","slug":"video-how-garissa-bound-umma-bus-was-swept-away-by-floods-with-51-passengers-on-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/gari\/video-how-garissa-bound-umma-bus-was-swept-away-by-floods-with-51-passengers-on-board\/","title":{"rendered":"Video &#8211; How Garissa bound Umma Bus was swept away by floods with 51 passengers on board"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This how the Umma bus was swept away by floods with 51 passengers on board. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hwg1rHpUHW\">pic.twitter.com\/hwg1rHpUHW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mike Sonko (@MikeSonko) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeSonko\/status\/1777627912897810663?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">All 51 passengers trapped on the roof of a bus that was swept away by floods on the Garissa-Nairobi highway have been rescued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Kenya Red Cross Society deployed boats to evacuate the passengers aboard the Umma Express bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">\u201cAll passengers aboard the bus have now been rescued, with priority initially given to women, children, and those who were sick\u201d, said the Society on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">It further said efforts are ongoing to rescue other stuck commuters after the road was cut off at Arer near Tulla Bridge, Tana River County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">The Wajir bound bus from Nairobi plunged into the flood waters at Arer area after the driver unsuccessfully tried to cross the section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo has advised motorists, boda bodas and pedestrians against crossing any of the affected road sections warning that it could lead to loss of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Mwabudzo further called on all residents living along River Tana to move to higher grounds to avoid being caught up by flooding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">\u201cWe are working with the chiefs to mobilize and move the people in riskier areas to higher grounds until the waters subside,\u201d Mwabudzo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">\u201cWe urge road users to be cautious and avoid driving in the floodwater for their safety,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">So far, there has been no loss of life and the most affected areas are farms along River Tana, parts of Iftin, Ziwani in Garissa town and other parts of Sankuri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Already, KeNHA has announced the closure of Nairobi-Garissa road due to flooding at Arer Area, between Bangaley and Madogo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">\u201cThe flooding at Arer has compromised the road and the diversion that was previously in use. This poses a high safety risk to road users.
