While the brand has its detractors who say prices are too high and the cars lack real-world exclusivity, there\u2019s plenty to recommend them \u2013 especially on the used market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Take the\u00a0third-generation A4, for example. This classy, premium compact executive saloon offers an overall package that many rivals can\u2019t beat, with excellent ergonomics, superb usability, efficient engines and top-notch build quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">As a used buy, the Mk3 A4 offers a huge amount of car for the money, especially as it was replaced late last year, but problems are more common than you might expect, so buy with care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The Audi A4 arrived in 1994 as a replacement for the Audi 80. It\u2019s now in its\u00a0fourth generation, however we\u2019re looking at the previous Mk3 that was on sale between 2008 and 2015, and the Mk2, which was in showrooms between 2000 and 2007, in this review.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u2022\u00a0<strong>Audi A4 Mk3 (2008-2015)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Recently replaced compact exec now looks great value used<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u2022\u00a0<strong>Audi A4 Mk2 (2000-2007)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0It\u2019s good to drive, reliable and doesn\u2019t shout about it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"referenced-gallery-node\">\n<div class=\"picture type-image file-gallery-adv-reference\" data-delta=\"3\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.autoexpress.co.uk\/96727\/used-audi-a4-review-pictures#3\" data-gallery-id=\"96727\" data-count=\"19\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Used Audi A4 - full front\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn2.autoexpress.co.uk\/sites\/autoexpressuk\/files\/styles\/article_main_image\/public\/2016\/08\/audi-a4-014.jpg\" alt=\"Used Audi A4 - full front\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The Mk3 A4 saloon arrived in February 2008, with 1.8 TFSI or 3.2 FSI petrol engines; diesel fans could choose between 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI or 3.0 TDI units. Buyers also had a choice of manual or CVT auto boxes. In June 2008 the\u00a0Avant estate\u00a0appeared, along with a 2.0 TFSI and a low-power (120bhp) 2.0 TDI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">An S tronic dual-clutch gearbox was offered with the 2.0 TFSI from February 2009; the four-wheel-drive A4 Avant allroad reached showrooms three months later, with 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI or 3.0 TDI engines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">By October 2009, the fleet-friendly 120g\/km 134bhp 2.0 TDIe had arrived. A facelift in January 2012 brought minor style changes and standard stop\/start across the range, plus revised suspension and steering.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"referenced-gallery-node\">\n<div class=\"picture type-image file-gallery-adv-reference\" data-delta=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.autoexpress.co.uk\/96727\/used-audi-a4-review-pictures#1\" data-gallery-id=\"96727\" data-count=\"19\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Used Audi A4 - rear\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn2.autoexpress.co.uk\/sites\/autoexpressuk\/files\/styles\/article_main_image\/public\/2016\/08\/audi-a4-009.jpg\" alt=\"Used Audi A4 - rear\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">There are no engines or transmissions to avoid, although the rare 3.2 FSI is costly to run, while manuals tend to be more reliable. If you tow, it\u2019s worth going for quattro 4WD; 3.0 TDI editions have this as standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">All A4s are equipped with alloys and single-zone climate control, plus electric windows, an electronic parking brake and electrically adjustable door mirrors. SE trim adds a 10-speaker stereo, three-zone climate control, auto lights and wipers, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and cruise control.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"digiteka_wrapper\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-7632188_25=\"60845\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-7632188_25=\"60845\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-7632188_25=\"1000\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-7632188_25=\"1\">\n<div id=\"ultimedia_wrapper\">\n<div id=\"um_ultimedia_wrapper_wrap_widget_default\">\n<div id=\"um_ultimedia_wrapper_wrap_title_panel\">\n<div id=\"um_ultimedia_wrapper_panel\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">S line brings 18-inch alloys, lower, stiffer suspension (the standard set-up is optional), LED rear lights and sportier exterior details.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Alternatives to the Audi A4 Mk3<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">German brands have the compact executive market sewn up, and the\u00a0BMW 3 Series\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/mercedes-c-class-review-2007-2014\/\">Mercedes C-Class<\/a>\u00a0are the A4\u2019s toughest adversaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/the-bmw-would-be-the-trophy-wife-you-left-your-first-wife-for\/\">BMW<\/a>\u00a0is the driving enthusiast\u2019s choice, but both cars offer excellent build quality, a wide choice of engines and trims plus saloon or estate body styles. An alternative option in this class is the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/lexus\/\">Lexus<\/a> IS. It comes only as a saloon and isn\u2019t very involving to drive, but is ultra-reliable and the brand\u2019s dealers tend to be superb. Standard equipment also leaves rivals trailing, plus on the latest version hybrid power is available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/volkswagen-golf-estatestation-wagon-review\/\">Volkswagen<\/a> Passat\u00a0is another great option. It offers the same engines and transmissions as the Audi, plus excellent build quality and top-notch practicality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">What to look for:<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"referenced-gallery-node\">\n<div class=\"picture type-image file-gallery-adv-reference\" data-delta=\"5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"http:\/\/www.autoexpress.co.uk\/96727\/used-audi-a4-review-pictures#5\" data-gallery-id=\"96727\" data-count=\"19\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Used Audi A4 - dash\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn1.autoexpress.co.uk\/sites\/autoexpressuk\/files\/styles\/article_main_image\/public\/2016\/08\/audi-a4-010.jpg\" alt=\"Used Audi A4 - dash\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Interior<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Packed with high-quality materials, the A4\u2019s interior is well laid-out and easy to use, and most cars are well equipped, too. Rear seat space is excellent for two, and the practical appeal of the saloon\u2019s large 480-litre boot is boosted by split-fold rear seats. The Avant offers up to 1,430 litres of space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Lights<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Xenon headlights are fitted to a lot of these A4s; they\u2019re standard on S line models. Replacement costs are high, though, so check they\u2019re in good order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Oil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Some engines suffer from high oil consumption, especially the four-cylinder units. They can use up to a litre of oil every 1,000 miles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Wheels<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Beware of big wheels, such as the 19-inch alloys.
