The government has sought designs from three countries that are yet to be named.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The new plates will require vehicle owners to pay Sh3,000 for each.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">NTSA will directly issue a fresh tender to overcome a legal hurdle that stopped smart number plates from being supplied by prisons department.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The implementation of smart plates comes in the wake of escalating duplication of the current number plated to evade tax cartels and criminals syndicates.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Kenya has about 3 million vehicles including motorcycles and trailers. This translates to about Sh 9 billion revenue from the new number plates.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">The computerised number plates have anti-counterfeit features including holograms, watermarks, and laser markers; these feature will help the police to trace information on any vehicle and its owner.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Tussles and legal battles over the issuance of tender has delayed implementation of the new generation number plates which were supposed to be rolled out in September 2015 with the aim of curbing crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New high-tech vehicle number plates will be introduced from January.
