{"id":3944,"date":"2024-08-21T11:39:14","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T08:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/?p=3944"},"modified":"2024-08-21T11:39:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T08:39:14","slug":"photos-nairobi-backstreets-re-carpeted-and-clean-you-wont-believe-it-kenyantraffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.magaripoa.com\/gari\/photos-nairobi-backstreets-re-carpeted-and-clean-you-wont-believe-it-kenyantraffic\/","title":{"rendered":"Photos &#8211; Nairobi backstreets re-carpeted and clean, you won&#8217;t believe it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Pumzi Lane, which stretches from Mondlane Street to Khoja Junction, has for long been in a deplorable state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">And the situation had only been made worse some time last year during the long heavy rains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">In its previous state, the road was practically unusable by motorists and pedestrians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">At one point, the road had been reduced to a potholes-riddled stretch of garbage, mud and raw sewage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Predictably, street urchins and the city\u2019s homeless folks capitalized on the situation to colonize the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_152404\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nairobinews.nation.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Pumzi-Lane-IV.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"A woman wades through a muddy section of Pumzi Lane back in December 2017 when the street was in its worst state. PHOTO | FRANCIS NDERITU\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Thankfully, the situation has now changed for the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">But it took relentless pressure from the public and many stories about the road in the media, for the Nairobi City County Government to comply and rehabilitate the street,\u00a0through financing from the Road Maintenance Levy Fund.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">The project, which began on September 28,\u00a02018, is in its final stages of completion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">The road has already been fully tarmacked from end to end, with pedestrian walkways on either side of the road to allow city residents to maneuver with ease.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nairobinews.nation.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Pumzi-Lane-V.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-152405 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nairobinews.nation.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Pumzi-Lane-V.jpg?resize=1320%2C742&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1320\" height=\"742\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">The many buildings along the street, whose backdoor entrances, loading zones and access to basement parking had for fallen into disuse, will soon happily open them up for use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 12pt\">Impressively, the adjoining Nuru Lane, Moi Lane and other lanes which allow residents to move in-between buildings have all had cabro laid down on them for easy access.
