Nine people were killed and six injured in an accident at Gilgil on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway early Friday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

The nine died on the spot when the matatu collided head-on<\/a> with a truck near St. Mary\u2019s Hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the police, the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) was ferrying passengers to Nairobi when the accident occurred at around 5am.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lorry was headed in the opposite direction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police said the lorry driver was overtaking another vehicle before hitting the matatu.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gilgil sub-county<\/a> police commander John Onditi said, \u201cEight people died on the spot, while one who was in a critical state died while undergoing treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The injured passengers are receiving treatment at St Joseph\u2019s and St Mary’s Mission hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Onditi said investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the accident<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to coronavirus regulations, a 14-seater matatu should carry eight passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are expecting management to record a statement with the police, to explain why they defied Covid-19 regulations<\/a>,” said Onditi.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
