You just overhauled your engine and you don’t want to go back to your mechanic after a few weeks.  Or you’ve finally purchased your dream car, it’s brand new, zero mileage and now you need to keep it going at long as possible in top condition. Be patient during the break-in period. Here are a few things to make that happen: [tweetthis twitter_handles=”@magaripoa” display_mode=”button_link”]How to break-in a newly overhauled engine[/tweetthis]

  • During the break-in period, normally the initial 1,600 km (1,000 miles), hold your maximum speed under 90 km/h (55 mph) or to the pace prescribed by your manufacturer.
  • Avoid unneeded baggage, for example, towing trailers, and stacking the rooftop rack or trunk with unnecessary stuff.
  • Do not allow your new engine to idle for long – this is important for the life of your vehicle, particularly during break-in period.
  • The oil pressure produced in idling may not send oil to all areas of the engine.
  • Use just light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms under 3,000 for the first couple of hours of driving.
