President Lazarus Chakwera sadly announced that the wreckage of a plane carrying Malawi’s vice-president, Saulos Chilima, and nine others has been found with no survivors. The aircraft disappeared from airport radars while flying within the country on Monday morning, amidst bad weather conditions.
After an overnight search in Chikangawa Forest, soldiers located the military aircraft. During a news briefing on Tuesday, President Chakwera expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic incident, revealing that the rescue team discovered the plane completely destroyed.
Despite coming from different political parties, Chilima and Chakwera had formed an alliance during the 2020 elections. The president paid tribute to Chilima, praising him as a good man, devoted father, and formidable VP. Chakwera considered it an honor to have worked alongside him.
Chilima, 51, was en route to represent the government at a burial when the plane crashed. The military is transporting the remains of the victims to Lilongwe, with funeral arrangements to be announced later.
Although widely loved in Malawi, especially among the youth, Chilima faced allegations of corruption in 2022. Despite denying any wrongdoing, the incident tarnished his reputation.
