Two people were injured on Friday afternoon after an aircraft crashed at Guara Primary School in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.

The pilot, a student at Mount Kenya Flight School, was completing a routine patrol under the guidance of his instructor before crashing the plane into one of the school’s buildings.

Students were forced to scamper for safety after learning activities were disrupted at the school.

One of the first responders, who spoke to the press, revealed that they rushed to the school to confirm the safety of the students and the passengers onboard after they heard the commotion.

Shortly after, police officers and a rescue team were dispatched to the area.

“We saw someone rushing to the gate, asking for assistance to help us save the passengers. Fortunately, we were able to calm the students who were screaming and running for their lives,” he said.

The pilot and the instructor, who were gravely injured, were rushed to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. No student was, however, injured during the incident.

Normally, an air crash investigation seeks to determine the cause of the accident and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The incident mirrors a similar one that occurred in the county in 2021 after two people died following a plane crash moments after take-off at the Nanyuki Airstrip.

KWSaircraft crashes in Nanyuki killing 2

Following the accident, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) released a statement revealing that the pilot and his passenger crashed after completing a routine patrol at Solio Rhino Sanctuary and en route to Meru National Park.

KWS officers rushed to assist in the evacuation operations but noted that the duo had already succumbed due to the impact of the crash by the time of their arrival.

“KWS is deeply saddened by the loss of two members of staff aboard a two-seater Husky aircraft registration number 5Y-KWL, which crashed immediately after takeoff from Nanyuki Civil Airport. The two are a pilot and a passenger,” the statement read in part.
