New details have emerged into the bus that was involved in a grisly accident at Subuiga area along the Meru-Nanyuki road on Saturday night, killing 12.

The bus, whose driver lost control and hit a 14-seater matatu before hitting a lorry, was a customized luxury party bus, complete with a sound system, TV screens, a DJ deck and dance floor.

Photos of the wreckage have also reveal that the couch had a liquor section, with one of the survivors disclosing that the passengers were headed to a bush night party in Samburu.

The bus, registration number KAX 998P, was labelled ‘Party on Wheels’ which is the name of the entertainment service which offers the customized buses and vans for ravellers.

Per the company’s Instagram page, the swanky coach also treats passengers to an on-board bathroom.

“We party on the move,” one of the promotional videos for the bus services reads.

According to traffic police, Saturday’s accident occurred at around 8.00 PM on Saturday, leaving 11 dead on the spot.

The death toll later rose to 12 on Sunday morning after one passenger succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning while receiving treatment at St Theresa Kiirua hospital.

“The two vehicles (the bus and the matatu) were going down the hill when the bus lost brakes hitting the matatu that veered off to a ditch. Seven people lost from the matatu lost their lives on the spot, while 4 others including the driver of the bus were killed after it also hit lorry” a police officer at the scene said.

As of Sunday morning, medics said that 21 more are still admitted at St Theresa Kiirua hospital and that two had been discharged.

Three other patients had meanwhile been released to recuperate at home on their own request.

Seven other victims who were rushed to Life care hospital had been treated and released.

The 11 bodies were removed to Meru Level IV Hospital mortuary.
