Nairobi, Kenya – April 7, 2025 – Emirates, the renowned Dubai-based carrier, has officially announced its membership in the Aviation Circularity Consortium (ACC), marking a significant step towards fostering a circular economy within the aviation industry. The announcement, made today, underscores Emirates’ commitment to its sustainability strategy and its dedication to reducing its environmental footprint.

The Aviation Circularity Consortium (ACC), headquartered in Dubai, is a collaborative network uniting key players across the aviation ecosystem. Its core mission is to accelerate the decarbonization of the global aviation supply chain through the implementation of high-value circularity principles. By bringing together airlines, regulators, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, and financial institutions, the ACC aims to forge and strengthen innovative pathways for a more sustainable future for air travel.

Emirates has already integrated various recycling and circular solutions into its operational framework as a cornerstone of its sustainability initiatives. These efforts range from creatively upcycling cabin interiors and incorporating more environmentally friendly materials in its onboard products to implementing in-flight waste reduction programs. The airline is continuously exploring novel approaches to minimize its environmental impact. Joining the ACC will allow Emirates to actively contribute to the advancement of circular aviation innovations, further bolstering the Consortium’s collective drive towards a more sustainable industry.

Adding further momentum to the ACC’s mission, Singapore-based SL Metals has also joined the consortium. SL Metals is a prominent distributor of aluminum alloys, serving the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. The company provides a comprehensive portfolio of aluminum alloy products catering to diverse industries, including aerospace, precision engineering, and semiconductors. Emirates highlighted that “SL Metals’ participation in the ACC will support ongoing efforts to drive more sustainable supply chain practices and accelerate material circularity in aviation,” recognizing the critical role of aluminum in the sector.

“Recognizing that industry-wide cooperation is essential to advancing aviation circularity, the ACC continues to unite key stakeholders across the aviation ecosystem together to drive meaningful progress,” stated Emirates in their announcement. This collaborative spirit is central to the ACC’s approach to tackling the complex challenges of sustainability in aviation.

Emirates becomes the second airline to join the ACC, following Qantas, signaling a growing industry-wide acknowledgment of the vital role circularity plays in achieving decarbonization goals. Emirates emphasized that its extensive experience in sustainable fleet management will be invaluable in addressing the critical issue of safely and responsibly managing end-of-life aircraft. With a significant fleet, including the iconic Airbus A380, Emirates’ insights into extending aircraft lifespan and responsible dismantling will be crucial to the Consortium’s work.

Ahmed Safa, Head of Engineering & MRO, Emirates Group, articulated the urgency of this shift, stating, “Aviation must rethink how materials are used across an aircraft’s lifecycle, from production to retirement. With the number of retired aircraft continuing to grow, the need for sustainable end-of-life solutions is more urgent than ever. At Emirates, we are identifying new pathways to extend our fleet’s lifespan, and joining the ACC enables us to collaborate on sustainable initiatives that reduce waste, enhance efficiency, and accelerate aviation’s transition to a circular economy.”

Sam Tan Yee Leong, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of SL Metals, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of aluminum in the industry: “Aluminium plays a critical role in aviation, as in many other industries, making responsible sourcing and efficient material use essential. Aluminum production also accounts for 3% of global industrial CO2 emissions, making sustainable practices across the supply chain increasingly important. SL Metals remains committed to improving sustainability within our own operations while supporting broader industry-wide efforts.” He further added, “Through the ACC, we look forward to advancing best practices in aluminum use and supporting initiatives that shape a more resilient and sustainable aviation supply chain.”

Emirates has a demonstrable track record in embracing upcycling and recycling initiatives. Notably, the airline has successfully transformed discarded leather aircraft seat covers into a stylish range of luggage and other lifestyle accessories, showcasing its commitment to finding innovative uses for end-of-life materials.

The addition of Emirates and SL Metals to the ACC comes on the heels of the Consortium’s significant milestone – the launch of its comprehensive 2050 industry roadmap in November 2024. This roadmap likely outlines key objectives and strategies for achieving a circular economy in aviation, providing a framework for the collaborative efforts of its members.

By joining the Aviation Circularity Consortium, Emirates is not only reinforcing its own sustainability commitments but also actively contributing to a collective effort that promises to reshape the future of aviation, making it more environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. Magaripoa.com will continue to track the progress of the ACC and the contributions of its members as they work towards a more sustainable aviation industry.
