The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has taken a bold step by suspending the operating license of Super Metro Limited, citing multiple violations of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) regulations. This decision, announced on Thursday, is effective immediately and is aimed at enhancing road safety and enforcing regulatory compliance.
Why Was Super Metro Suspended?
According to NTSA, the move was necessary to ensure the company prioritizes passenger safety. A detailed review of its operations revealed alarming issues such as:
- Expired vehicle inspection certificates – 15 out of 523 vehicles failed to meet the required standards.
- Lapsed road service licenses – 8 vehicles were found operating without valid permits.
- Speed limiter violations – 294 vehicles had expired certificates or exceeded the 80 km/h speed limit, with 109 vehicles caught speeding beyond the threshold.
- Unqualified drivers – Some drivers lacked the necessary credentials, posing a major safety risk.
- Labor law violations – The company failed to comply with employment regulations, such as issuing contracts and making statutory deductions.
What Does This Mean for Commuters?
With the suspension in place, Super Metro’s operations have come to a halt, leaving many regular commuters stranded. NTSA has also cautioned the public against using the company’s vehicles and instructed law enforcement to impound any that violate the directive.
What Must Super Metro Do to Resume Operations?
To regain its license, the company must: ? Ensure all 294 flagged vehicles undergo inspections and comply with speed limiter regulations. ? Re-test 42 drivers found guilty of multiple speed violations. ? Remove all unqualified drivers from its fleet. ? Provide proof of labor law compliance, including payroll records and employment contracts. ? Conduct a road safety sensitization program for all drivers, monitored by NTSA.
What’s Next for Public Transport?
The suspension raises concerns about the general state of PSV compliance in Kenya. Are other SACCOs adhering to the rules? NTSA’s decision sets a precedent for stricter enforcement, signaling a shift towards safer roads and greater accountability in public transport.
