Two suspects, Tanzanian nationals were apprehended in Loitokitok and 2 of the 5 stolen motorcycles recovered.
The motorcycles were stolen in Matuu town, Yatta constituency, Machakos county. Police have established this to be the the work of a crime syndicates that has tentacles spreading across our borders.
The motor cycle dealer who reported the break in explained that he had stored the units in his locked premises at the close of business on Monday. Upon reporting to work on Wednesday morning he discovered that his shop had been broken into and five brand new bikes were missing.
When the police received the information they immediately swung into action interrogating the staff, watchmen and surrounding traders. They chanced upon a lead that gave wind that that the bikes had been transported to Nairobi, at a location near Nyayo stadium in readiness for transportation to Tanzania. The criminals were unaware that the motor bikes had GPS trackers installed.
Through the phone records of the suspects, they established that local criminals were in constant communication with their Tanzanian counterparts waiting for the shipment on the other end. When the sleuths arrived at Nyayo they discovered that the shipment had already been loaded in to a truck and was on the way to the border, they gave a chase and caught up with the suspects at Loitokitok 226 km from Nairobi and only 5 km to the Tanzanian border.
They have offloaded the motorcycles and stored them into different waiting areas. Police believe that the bikes were to be assigned to riders from Tanzania who would ride them across the border using illegal entry points. The 2 who were arrested are helping the police with the information that will unearth the whereabouts of the other 3 bikes as well as the other members of the gang.
Several motor bikes have been reported missing only for them to end up across the border where they are then sold to unsuspecting customers.
