What’s the process of buying a used car locally?

STEP 1: view/test as many cars of the same model (viewing/testing different models will clutter your judgment and complicate comparison)

STEP2: on the car you’ve liked and want to buy, ask to see the log-book (original), if the owner begins giving excuses why the logbook cannot be produced find another car.

STEP 3: go to a search on NTSA portal with the car registration number to find if the ownership details tally with what you saw on the log book, it will cost ksh500 550 on hustle free www.ecitizen.go.ke. If it doesn’t tally, run very fast towards the opposite direction.

STEP5: after verifying the details, have the sale agreement drafted. If it involves installments, it’s wise to involve a lawyer (just in case). Otherwise cash transactions are easier.

STEP6: very important always have a companion with you, meet and view the car in public, places like malls & parking lots.

STEP7: FINALLY, after final installment you will receive the ORIGINAL logbook signed by owner, completed (by both parties) Start the transfer process on NTSA TIMS portal. You will be charged a transfer fee according to the engine size –CC e.g.
1300cc appx ksh,3000 1500cc appx ksh 5,000

What about a payment plan?

That’s between you and the seller; the terms of payment (including what will happen in case you default) should be clearly captured on the Sale Agreement

NB/ never pay for what you haven’t seen in physical, photos do lie.
