The large trailers that carry other cars and SUVs are often relatively light when they are not carrying vehicles. Because of their large size and shape, these trailers can actually be quite unsteady when they are unloaded. This means that sudden movements by the driver might cause fishtailing or swerving that is difficult to control and could interfere with drivers in other lanes.
When these trucks are fully-loaded with cars and SUVs, each of which likely ways upwards of one ton, they can become extremely heavy. These trailers often have two or even three tiers to carry cars. Some of the more awkward car carrier trailers carry cars on top of the driver’s cab, or even hanging forward off the front. Some rare models of car carrier even put cars into two rows, further increasing the weight and instability of the carrier. Others even have a trailer that is split halfway along its length and jointed, making the trailer more difficult to control at speed and during emergency maneuvers.
