Three robbery suspects were arrested at 2am this morning, after they robbed passengers in a Matatu of their mobile phones and other valuables.
The three Vincent Obongo, 38, Edward Kimani, 22 and Mohamed Idi Ndote, 27, were arrested by a contingent of officers on patrol at the Nyayo stadium roundabout, shortly after a robbery incident that occurred along Mombasa road.
In a crime that is gaining currency in the city, the crew posing as genuine Matatu operators, sneak out PSV vehicles taken to garages for repairs and use them to illegally ferry passengers at night, before robbing them of their valuables.
The Matatus commonly referred to as ‘Usiku Sacco’ comprise of unroadworthy vehicles, most of which operate without the required documentation.
We urge members of public to be on the lookout for such vehicles, especially those ferrying passengers to routes different from those indicated on the vehicle’s body.
Meanwhile, detectives based at DCI Langata, contacted the owners of the phones recovered from the suspects, to record their statements before they face justice in a court of law.
